Just a bit of school time in February

February was a month that made us feel we were actually accomplishing something.  I don't know what it was (maybe good health, maybe a renewed sense of peace, maybe just a gift from God...probably a little of all three) but we seemed to have this smooth going of "getting it all done," on most days anyway.  I was challenged to take a picture every day and "see" what we had accomplished rather than see what still needed to be done.  So here are a few of our highlights for the month-minus our Switzerland trip.  That's on the next post.

When I walked outside to get something from the car I saw this picture.  It was priceless to my eyes because I'm certain the Italians think I shop daily with this much cardboard.  That's all it is-cardboard.  Nothing else.  I laughed my head off when I looked at their pile compared to ours. (I do think we missed a pickup one week due to traveling, but still it was funny to me.)

We are studying Ancient Greece and read about the Minotaur in Crete.  This is James' version of the Labyrinth.  Isaac enjoyed being Theseus, solving the maze, and killing the Minotaur.

Isaac helping Samantha with her math.

                                                  Grammar time!

Listen to that sound.  How does the flying machine you made, make that humming sound?  Experimenting with sound.

Isaac is reading!  Yay!  He's working on his book that Samantha and I made him.  He's cutting out pictures that start with the same sound as the letter.

Can you guess what these two are studying?

Yep, the anatomy.

Painting on ice was fun...more for Isaac than Samantha.  Samantha wanted to keep her picture but soon found it wouldn't keep.  (Don't mind the pooper scooper in the background on the table...lovely isn't it?... It's a picture that just doesn't "feel" or "look" right.  Actually, looking at it turns my tummy.  It's not used for scoopin up poop- I promise.  Focus on the kid not the poop:)

We had the privilege of babysitting for a sweet family.  Her four sibling children were just adopted about a month ago from Poland.  They are the most precious children!  I loved hanging out with them and getting to know their personality.

This was my little helper.  She loved being in the kitchen and wasn't shy about eating it too.

I think this was Lego Land for them:)

                                                       Piano lessons

They were so happy with shields, swords, and nerf guns.

Movie time, which also means cuddle time.

We had a friend over the other day and decided to make some cupcakes.  Precious girls they are!

James was diligent in making his hovercraft.  Finding all the correct materials was no easy task.  He enjoyed learning about Newton's Law of friction.

On one cold day we decided to have a picnic in the living room next to the nice warm fire.

On a warm day, we went with some friends on a little hike.  You see that wire between the fencing?   Yep, it's an electric fence.  Only a few of us got shocked-including me making sure it wasn't on.  Ha!  Now I know and everybody else does too, it's "hot".

Isaac is tall enough to reach the button.  (You can't see this, but my eyes aren't dry writing those words.  He's such a big boy now.)  The picture I missed was the one where he pushed the button with the lid on the milk jar.  That was a nice little clean-up.  Raw milk, yummy!

Made time to play games too.

Some funny things that were said this month:

We were sitting at the table for dinner and Samantha said with a very serious tone, "Can I ask a question?  In heaven do we blink?"

One morning my boy just got done with his devotion  (he actually did it that day) he asks me, "Why did Paul pray for God to remove his thorn three times if he could just reach down and pull it out himself?"  That gave us a few good topics to discuss.

My 39th Birthday

WOW!  I'm 39 and spoiled!
This was one of the best birthday gifts I could ask for.  My husband took the whole day off of work and wouldn't let me lift a finger to help out.  He made a wonderful breakfast then told me to go upstairs and lay on the couch while Samantha rubbed my feet.  I could do whatever I wanted for a couple of hours, my favorite choice was to lay in bed and read.  That's when my family decorated and gave me these wonderful gifts.  I opened my card up from my children and found a paper inside telling me that Saturday (it was Tuesday) we were all going to the Orchestra at La Fenice in Venice.  What a gift!  To enjoy an orchestra with my children!  When I opened my husbands card up, another piece of paper fell out letting me know I was to get ready to leave for an opera at a place (Palazzo  Barbarigo-Minotto) in Venice.  We had a babysitter arriving in a few hours.   I was so surprised I couldn't believe it.  This birthday is one I will cherish forever.  Thank you so much my sweet family!

The above picture is from Samantha.  The picture below is from Isaac.

Jana drew me a cardinal knowing how much I love watching birds.  They are so sweet!

James drew me a beautiful butterfly and vase of flowers.  This is quite a gift from my boy!  He is not one to just sit down and draw.  What a treasure for me to keep.

...and this was my massage!

The opera we attended was actually four in two different rooms of the palace.  They acted out scenes from four different operas and switched rooms halfway in between.  If we knew Italian we would have understood the story line a bit better.   I was grateful to get to read a little about them in our pamphlet.

On the train to Venice for the opera.

We found a quaint little osteria (quaint family-style Italian restaurant) and tried some new wine.

This is walking into the opera room.  We were not allowed to photograph during the performance.

This is the second room.

Going to the orchestra with the family!

We thought our orchestra began at 7pm so we found a restaurant that was open around 5:30 (that is early to eat dinner in Italy) we were glad to find something open.  Here we are enjoying our dinner.

It was the beginning of Carnevale so there were streamers and confetti all over the ground.  We saw a few colorful costumes with masks and just a couple children reaching in their bags to throw confetti pieces around.  But, the children's favorite part about Venice are the birds.  They just love to feed the pigeons.

We thought we were doing pretty good.  We found the orchestra building an hour and a half early:(  Then tried to find some dolce (dessert).  Since we were soooooo early we thought we could find a cute little dolce shop and get some dessert.  Would you know it?!  We could not find one place that would sell us just dessert.  We were kicked out of one restaurant because that's all we wanted to order.  They told us "We are a restaurant, not a place for just dolce."  We wandered for awhile and decided to stop at a shop that sold a little of everything including chocolate.  That hit the sweet tooth nicely.  We were then off to the orchestra with chocolate in hand.

We were in the nose bleed section, but I loved it!  My kiddos could look down and see everything while enjoying watching people.  We did need to look over the lights which got a little tiresome towards the end, but we just moved seats or sat on the edge of the chair.

A memory of mine that I will cherish the rest of my life.  Thank you my wonderful family!  I am blessed to have you as my husband and children.
